Water Kids Don't Float

Swimming, boating and fishing are favorite activities in Chatham County. Everyone should learn to swim and wear life-jackets when riding in a boat. Supervision of children in water is essential to prevent drowning.

Life Jacket Loaner Boards: In 2008 Safe Kids Savannah launched a program to loan life jackets at two local boat ramps. The program continues to grow with new loaner boards being added each year. Currently, they are located at:

  • Rodney Hall Boat Ramp at Skidaway Narrows
  • Lazaretto Creek Boat Ramp at Tybee Island
  • Houlihan Bridge Boat Ramp
  • Thunderbolt Boat Ramp
  • Frank Spencer Boat Ramp
  • Kings Ferry Boat Ramp

The life jackets are available for loan when boating in this area. We only ask that boaters return the life jackets to the loaner stations so that others may use the jackets.

Georgia law requires children under 13 to wear a life jacket when riding in a boat. But regardless of the law, boaters, no matter what age, are safest when everyone wears a life jacket at all times when riding in a boat.
